Who We Are

The AI Safety Fund (the AISF) is on a mission to accelerate and expand the field of AI safety research to promote the responsible development and deployment of frontier models, minimize risks, and enable independent, standardized evaluations of capabilities and safety.

Born from a collaborative vision of leading frontier AI developers and philanthropic partners, the fund will award research grants to independent researchers addressing critical safety risks associated with developing frontier models and preventing or mitigating malicious use of AI systems. AISF is a multi-million-dollar research initiative independently administered by Meridian.

Over time, the AISF will deploy grant funding through a combination of open calls and solicited proposals. The most up-to-date information regarding funding opportunities will be available on the Application page.

Meridian Prime, registered in the United States as a 501(c)(3) organization, serves as the fund owner and fiscal agent of the AISF, holding pooled funds and distributing them through invitation only and open calls for proposals. Meridian Institute, under an agreement with Meridian Prime, serves as the Secretariat for the AISF and will form AISF’s structure and governance systems, develop a research agenda, and manage the proposal solicitation and review process among other responsibilities.
